When your mind is wide open.

Do you know this moment when your mind is wide open while overseeing the horizon or sitting on your cushion meditating, and finally, you understand what happened? Suddenly the clouds of confusion dissolve, and you can see clearly. You understand some of the conditions which brought you to this moment; you know what made people be hurt and therefore be unkind today. Sometimes you smile, seeing the dots of the past connect. That is a big step.

And now? What do you do when you move on? What will this insight make you do? Mostly it vanishes as fast as it came…every so often, we remember something vaguely during the day; now and then, there stays this soft smile on our lips, and once in a while, we decide to change….

I write my understanding as fast as possible on a piece of paper. And if I am touched or regret and sincerely wish to alter my behavior, I write my intention to do that down too — the more precise, the better. And while doing it, I am kind to myself and forward-looking. In the end, it is not so much about what happened. It is about the future, which begins right here and now with each beautiful thought, conscious word, and kind doing.
